Impact in Confidence level:
For the students who come
from disadvantaged backgrounds such as rural or backward areas with no
confidence, for them, play also creates an equalizing space within the
classroom moreover confidence, where teachers can differentiate instruction between
them and students can suits school without immediately feeling behind or
negative impact on mind.
“I saw firsthand how
having play creates important entry points for teenagers on all different
levels,” Pappas said. “Through play, kids have of these different choices and
teachers can do tons to differentiate through materials and interactions.”
And it creates a fun
culture around learning.
“If they’re reading words
and finding it fun, what are they getting to believe words and letters?” Bauter
said. “It’s not getting to be boring — it’s getting to be fun and exciting.”
Parents
are often resistant:
But its not been a seamless transition in Watertown.
Some faculty members and principals worry that students won’t be ready for
testing in class without longer dedicated to learning during a traditional
style, with pencil and paper. That’s something Hirsh-Pasek has found in her
work, too: Educators tell her they just like the idea of play, but most of time
they feel they can’t use the word in their kindergarten classrooms because of their
community assumes it means students are not learning. Parents are often
resistant also , fearing their child are going to be behind academically if
they play an excessive amount of in class .
Project-based
learning:
“Mindset change … takes an
extended time,” Drappo said. “But we’re getting to keep poking the bear.”
Watertown’s goal is to gradually implement play-based learning through third
grade. The students who are in fourth grade and above, they use project-based
learning, where hands-on, sometimes semester-long projects guide students
through their curriculum and orientation based classes.
