Some faculty members and principals worry that students won’t be ready for testing in class without longer dedicated to learning during a traditional style, with pencil and paper. That’s something Hirsh-Pasek has found in her work, too: Educators tell her they just like the idea of play, but most of time they feel they can’t use the word in their kindergarten classrooms because of their community assumes it means students are not learning. “Mindset change … takes an extended time,” Drappo said. “But we’re getting to keep poking the bear.” Watertown’s goal is to gradually implement play-based learning through third grade.
